China is an ancient civilization, a cultural region, and a multinational entity in East Asia. The Chinese civilization is one of the world's oldest continuous civilizations, consisting of states and cultures dating back more than six thousand years.
Today China is the largest country in East Asia and the third largest country in the world. With a population of over 1.3 billion, roughly one-fifth of the world's total population, it is the most populous country in the world.
China is the world's largest consumer of steel and concrete, using, respectively, a third and over a half of the world's supply of each. It is also the world's second largest importer of petroleum. Counting all products, China is the third largest importer and the second largest exporter in the world.
Beijing is a metropolis in northern China, is the capital of the People's Republic of China. Beijing is China's second largest city, after Shanghai. Beijing is recognized as the political, educational, and cultural center of the People's Republic of China.
Shanghai situated on the banks of the Yangtze River Delta in East China, is the largest city in China and the eighth largest in the world. Shanghai's skyscrapers clearly signal the city's predominance in economic fields.
