The Forbidden City (built in 1420) was the Chinese imperial palace for almost five centuries, home of the Emperor's household, and the ceremonial and political center of Chinese government. The complex consists of 980 surviving buildings, located in the middle of Beijing, and now houses the Palace Museum.
The Great Wall of China stretches to over 6,700 km (4,160 miles), was built, rebuilt, and maintained between the 5th century BC and the 16th century to protect the northern borders of the Chinese Empire during the rule of successive dynasties. It is estimated that 2 to 3 million Chinese had died building the wall, and at its peak it was guarded by more than one million men.
Shanghai is the largest city in China, one of the world's busiest ports, one of the nation's most important cultural, commercial, financial, industrial and communications centers. One of the symbols of Shanghai is the tallest tower in Asia, the distinctive Oriental Pearl Tower, is located in Shanghai.
